In 2011, Jamie and Robin bought a farm that was for sale just across the street from Jamie’s dad’s house. The farm was previously owned by “Ms. Judy,” who raised goats for many years. When Jamie and Robin bought the farm, they started renovating and rebuilding the old barn that stood alone in one of the fields. This would be used as a shop and office space, and at the time they had planned to use the acreage to make hay. They then started out with twelve chickens with the desire to have their own fresh eggs. Those twelve chickens turned into a sign out front that said, “eggs for sale,” and a self-serve fridge inside the little chicken coop. Later, the number of chickens grew, and they added two steers to fill the freezer. This quickly grew popular within their friend group and neighbors who wanted to have local beef and eggs. At this time, Jamie saw that there was a desire for locally grown products, so they opened a store in the barn, open by appointment only, selling cuts of beef and eggs.
Two chicken houses, a duck pen, a pig barn, a large steer barn, and two nearby rented farms are what has become of those twelve chickens. During Covid, business was booming and sales increased tremendously, so much that they built a store up at the top of the driveway and hired their first employee. Now, several years since Covid, Willow Valley is open four days a week, selling home grown beef, pork, chicken, and eggs, along with many locally sourced products from other local farms. In the summer months there is a produce stand out front and fresh turkeys for Thanksgiving. With only room to improve, Willow Valley Farm is still expanding with tremendous support from the local community and will proudly continue to serve their neighbors.
